So you’ve taken the plunge, so to speak, and you’ve booked your trip with Baldy Shores Kayaking. We get paddlers with all levels of experience, from seasoned pros to first-timers. If you fall into the latter category, you're in the right place!
Let's dive into a few simple things you can expect to ensure you have a fantastic and comfortable adventure on the river.
For beginners new to the activity, the first rule is to have fun safely. This means wearing the life vest (also called a PFD, or Personal Flotation Device) provided to you.
Make sure it fits snugly, but not so tight that it limits your range of motion. If you need help adjusting it, our staff is happy to help you at the launch!
Dressing appropriately is key to comfort on the water. Think layers and materials that handle getting a little wet.
Clothing: Wear clothes that can get damp, like athletic shorts, leggings, or swim trunks and a t-shirt or sun shirt. It's wise to bring an extra layer, like a light jacket or long-sleeve shirt, that you can easily take off if you get warm.
Footwear: Water shoes, sandals with a backstrap, flip-flops, or even Crocs all make great footwear for kayaking.
You'll want to bring a few things with you, but remember that space is limited. It's best to pack light and keep everything secure.
💧 Drinking Water: Staying hydrated is crucial. Plan on bringing a bottle of water.
☀️ Sun Protection: Sunscreen is a must, even on cloudy days. A hat and sunglasses are also great ideas.
🔑 Secure Your Keys & Wallet: Place keys in a zippered pocket or wear them on a neck lanyard. Phones and wallets should be kept in a waterproof container or a sealed zip-lock bag to keep them dry.
🥨 Light Snacks: A granola bar or a small bag of trail mix can be a great energy booster.
A Note on Nature: Please remember to pack out any trash you create. Let's work together to keep the beautiful Indian River pristine for everyone to enjoy!
Worried about technique? Don't be! The Indian River is a gentle kayaking experience with no rapids and an average water depth of around 3 feet or less.
While watching a few "how to paddle" YouTube videos beforehand can be helpful, our staff can also give you basic instructions on how and where to grip the paddle before you launch.
With these basics covered, you are well-prepared to enjoy your first kayaking trip. Of course, if you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask our staff on-site.
Haven't booked your trip yet, or ready for another one? The beautiful Indian River is waiting for you!
